Saturday, February 26, 2011You've got some groovin' music play-lists. You should upload some stuff. That'd be super groovy. Maybe you have already. I dunno. Either way. Thanks for listening to good music and sharing it w/ the damned world. :D

Friday, December 24, 2010Hello, found your site while searching for Harold—who turns out to be your friend, yes? Anyway, I enjoyed reading your telling of his antics during hurricane Katrina. I met Harold a few months after Katrina in Washington Square at a Thanksgiving meal and interviewed him on video. It's a short video, but he would probably enjoy seeing it. I don't know his last name or any information about him, so I've not been able to contact him directly. Please send him my email address, if you're still in touch with him. I'd like to share the video with him. Thanks!

Monday, June 23, 2008Enjoyed the complete New Orleans piece. Parts of it hit home too, being single and 45, different from my peers, etc. Good luck to both of us!
Just saw I'm Not There in a nearly empty theater in Dunedin. Pretty weird film. Can we expect a review here?

I'd rather watch Eat The Document and Don't Look Back again instead of a lame reenactment.hello...found the site as I googled for old record stores i grew up in - rough trade on 6th (saw camper there - i was just a kid; my dad forbid me from going down to that lousy neighborhood, but I wanted a DOA record and to see the show - when was that, 87?), wauzi where the gap is on haight. record vault on polk where I met jello biafra one afternoon.
dug through your site - funny you mention death guild. I helped open that club out at the Pit on folsom. was the DJ for the first 2 years until i burned out. it was an insane scene back then. monday nights and it would be packed with goths and leather fag regulars and punks and hippies.
and those haight st. fairs back then.. i was at all those shows - fantastic - stone c.f., mcm, primus. it was mad. and everyone knew everyone. haven't been in years, but I imagine much has changed along with the rest of that city.
the site brought a flood of SF memories. thanks for the writing

Monday, October 22, 2007Hey man,
Thanks for the mix CD. I actually like the scratchy quality. It gives it a sort of old crusty charm. Anyway, you've probably heard them already, but if not, check out Zydepunks. Sort of a New Orleans Pogues.

Thursday, August 09, 2007i came across your site when i was looking for information about Washboard Lisa, who i knew when last i lived in NOLa. Curious and curiouser i became, and so i spent some time here. Wasted Space is a most enjoyable waste of time—i only wish i'd found it later in the day so i could have had a glass of whisky with my wanderings—as it is i have to take my dog to the vet at 6. You evoked the city like i was back there for a moment. Thank you—keep on keepin' on, dude. You got the touch.
Charlotte <dandylion28@hotmail.com>
Wednesday, July 25, 2007Hi James,
How are you? I also found Wasted Space while searching the Internet for info about Departmentstore Santas. I really enjoy the hoodoo that youdoo—your writing inspires me to stop being so crabby and judgmental, go out and enjoy life... I also live in San Francisco, and we have about two degrees of separation in several instances. I hope we meet someday. Please keep sharing!
Did you have a piece about Ugly Betty on your blog recently? I remember an endorsement, with info on where to find it online. I checked it out (it's great tv), came back to wasted space—gone. Wha?

What was the name of the band you played with in front of the A&P in New Orleans? When I lived in New Orleans that was my favorite band.

The lineup of players was pretty informal when I lived there. After I left, they turned into a more regular group with a band name, but I can't recall what it was.Great harp playing.

Saturday, September 9, 2006I went to high school with Astrid MacCreadie and want to thank you for the beautiful work you put together on wastedspace.com. Astrid was one of my best friends during the high school years of the 60s, working on Galileo High School's Literary Magazine, we were co-editors. Astrid was witty and sharp and a bit scary. Her story with her mom was not good but Astrid has a spirit in her that would not die. She wrote such outrageously original stuff, much in the style of John Lennon's prose at the time, but even more rich. I shall always remember Astrid lovingly and now regretfully that life so often separates people who once enjoyed each other so much. I experienced the spirit of Astrid Naomi MacCreadie much in the vein of Pippi Longstocking or some similar creature that could inspire others to revel in wit and originality and intensity. I love that she loved cats as do I. I'll always remember Astrid fondly and wistfully. She brought David to meet my mom and dad and was like family that went its separate ways after a time. Thanks, again.

Saturday, March 4, 2006Hey, I found your blog about your trip to Phoenix when I was doing a search for Shake—a rock and roll dance party I throw in Scottsdale. Bummer you missed it. Next time you come to Arizona, let me know and I'll make sure you find the place.

Saturday, February 4, 2006Your knowledge of Rolling Stones material is impressive. I have enjoyed browsing and reading your site. I stumbled in while searching Google for a source for a recording of "We Had It All" from the Emotional Rescue sessions. I know there are recordings out there but have no savvy whatever about how to track them down. Thanks to Google, at least, for turning me on to your site. If you considered me a friend and couldn't decide what to give me for my birthday, I'd hint for Stoned. That is one impressive mix of songs. You really know your stuff! Thanks for the inspiration!
The Holy Goof <nc_goof@yahoo.com>
Sunday, January 15, 2006Thanks for your sharing on craigslist for the free Stones show! I was visiting from Austin & would not have known about this viewing area without reading your post while searching for cheap tix. As a result, we had a blast with lots of local fans—dancing, cheering and singing thruout the show. While exploring your site, I was very moved with the website you did for Astrid. Thanks also for sharing a glimpse into her life as well.

Followed your advice and saw the Stones from outside the park, we had a great time! Thanks.

Wednesday, November 16, 2005Howdy James!
I came upon your site quite by accident. I was getting frustrated unsuccessfully trying to download Stones bootleg torrents (personal enjoyment of course), never get to 'em in time. So I went a searchin'. Anyway, Google is a beautiful thing, it makes such happy accidents possible as finding sites like yours. Pulled up a chair, sat a spell, heard the word from the songs you sang well. Don't be offended when I tell you that you REALLY blow—I mean it as a compliment! Very well recorded BTW, nice clean production, & clear sound. Good luck brotha' man! If you're ever playin' in/around L.A./Pasadena, drop me a line, I'll try to come out & say hi. Take care.

Monday, November 14, 2005greg baise sent me the link to your site... nice to read more info about the departmentstore santas... also nice to have an mp3 handy, that's always been one of my fave songs, tho i find at least several of them to be amazing... joseph continues to hint that there is another departmentstore santas lp "colonial empire" to be released someday, and he does regular small runs of instrumental double-tracked guitar releases... i was fortunate enuff to have him contact me and we've become friends and played together... he is so modest and does not much talk about the departmentstore santas... preferring to emphasize the newer stuff and his work in support of the guy goode/decentones project or other projects he has contributed to... after as much as i have talked with him it's still a mystery to me why there is only one lp of his songwriting with lyrics... thanks for the link to my departmentstore santas site, too...

Wednesday, October 12, 2005Found your site while doing a search for Lissa Driscoll, aka Washboard Lisa. I played a National guitar with her and Augie on the street in the early 90s, and Lissa has appeared on a CD of mine. I still live and play in New Orleans with my band the Deltabilly Boys. Check us out next time you're in town. Your buddies at Louisiana Music Factory will have heard of me, as I do in-stores there every so often, and I play at Jazz Fest. My website: deltabilly.com
Enjoyed your New Orleans cops stories. I have a few myself. Peace.

Wednesday, August 17, 2005Thank you for putting up the Astrid pages. I was looking for her because we went to high school together. I was sad that she had died, but I was thrilled that you put up her photos so I could celebrate her life, no matter how short. Thank you so much for dedicating part of your site to my friend, lost for many years, found and lost again.

Wednesday, July 20, 2005James! Your site makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside! Thanks for mentioning me in Departmentstore Santas thing. It is such a small world! I still can't believe I ran into you in New Orleans! Keep on dancin' luv.

Monday, June 13, 2005As a New Orleans native turned San Francisco derelict, I thoroughly enjoyed your page. I think you shake it at Popscene every once in a while. I tend bar there and would gladly trade you a pint of our third finest whiskey for a copy of "Elvis vs Black People." Give a shout, I've got the longest hair behind the bar.

Saturday, November 6, 2004Do you know if Astrid Naomi MacCreadie was the daughter of the Astrid Rasmussen who is the source for the character Coral Fellows in Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory? I read in Volume One of Norman Sherry's The Life of Graham Green about his meeting the Rasmussen family in Yajalon Mexico in 1938. Sherry notes that he was told (in 1978) that "Fru Rasmussen" had died in California and that her eldest daughter Astrid had died before her. If you look at Sherry's book there are a number of pictures of the Rasmussens in 1938.

Yes she was. Before Astrid Naomi was born, the Rasmussens owned a plantation in Mexico and were acquainted with Graham Greene. Astrid's mother did pass away before her grandmother.COOL SITE MGABADA AND HI TO GUEST.

Wednesday, December 10, 2003that's some really interesting writing, dude. I was bored so I was like, "Let's see if there's a website called wasted space..." and then there was, and it wasn't porn (for once!) so I was like, "YAY!" I really like reading other people's writing so... I read it all.

Monday, June 24, 2002Very kewl site. I was just in SF, and I saw a sticker for wastedspace.com at a bus stop on the corner of Van Ness and Geary. I work for an Internet company in Mississippi and was in town for a conference. Of all the information intake and URLs that flowed through my head, yours managed to stick. It got through the clutter and I checked it out today. I dig it.

Monday, June 21, 1999snagged your website off a funny 'Impeach Clinton?' poster on a telephone pole. now i've been to the website, and it looks like a (sadly) defunct magazine from many years ago. who's behind the mask please, and what do y'all do these days, besides bemuse pedestrians with the sexual antics of Grover Cleveland?

Thursday, September 17, 1998Hi, I usually don't write people like this but can't help it this time. I have to say that I love your poetry. A clear indication is that I spent time in wasted space and read every piece. I took the liberty (and time) to print them out so I'll be able to read them again on the bus on my way home tonight. Just wanted to let you know that even someone in Iceland likes what you write. No analysis here. Thanks again. Waste some more space.

I spotted one of your poems stuck to a bus shelter at Sacramento and Polk. The "Stir" piece, I believe. I came right home and checked it out. I'm even using it as a home page, since thinking tends to go on hiatus while netted. Your page helps me with perspective and all. Thanks.
